Artist's Statement
I began my artistic career by painting traditional New Mexico scenes in a realistic style. Wanting to simplify my work led me to explore abstract painting and that has been my passion since 1991. It gave me a freedom to express myself in an entirely new way.In 1998 I took Monotype classes at the Collage of Santa Fe and was intrigued by the spontaneity, surprise and flexibility it offers. Wanting variety in my work led me to collage. I love the textures I get by using bits of fabrics and rice paper to create an image. Initially I begin my work without a preconceived idea. Color, shapes and spatial relationships determines where I place the fabric or collage papers. As I add pieces of torn paper and fabrics with interesting colors and textures, a composition that is pleasing to the eye begins to unfold. Balance, design and composition all come into play before I consider my work finished.
I hope you enjoy looking at my work.
